Apparently, all of Kansas City is collectively freaking out about the new Princess Diana exhibit opening at Union Station on Friday. Yours truly got to go backstage and get a sneak preview last week. And, yep, it was mighty impressive.
Lady Diana Spencer was a clotheshorse … she made the most of being a fashionista. Combine that with her darling figure and she was a designer’s dream model. Plus, she had a Midas touch. She knew what worked and was usually game to try out trendy, young, new designers.
The dress collection combines things from her childhood all the way up to her untimely passing in 1997. But, of course, the piece de resistance is the wedding dress. Only two people are allowed to touch the dress … the exhibit’s handlers. And there’s a security guard standing guard 24/7 to protect the gown. (Name one other dress that has THAT distinction, yo.)
No, seriously. There isn’t one.
The dress (and bridesmaids’ outfits) cost just $2,000 back in the day. A mere pittance to what Kate Middleton’s wedding gown will likely cost. And considering nearly a BILLION (yes, with a “B”) watched her get married to Prince Charles, it’s a dress that lives in infamy.
Of course, it was only AFTER her divorce Diana’s fashion sense really kicked in. Being single meant Diana could throw caution to the wind and discovered her sexy, playful side. Hemlines got higher. Necklines plunged lower. And along the way, she was adored, revered and idolized.
In my latest “What The Chic”, I was spouting Princess Diana factoids right and left. And while I want the viewer to think I was just that fashion-savvy, the truth is my work wife Tiffany was standing just off to the side of the shot barking out Princess Di trivia. It worked well.
If you didn’t know any better you’d think I was the Rainman of royal knowledge.

MY dress is guarded 24-7. It’s in a box, in the attic, next to the Christmas decorations. Duh.
Curious. What size was she? Her dresses look tiny.
