If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times: “Michael, you lead a charmed life.” And, normally, I pooh-pooh the idea, but lately I’m starting to think it’s 100 percent accurate.
Take last Friday for example. Out of the clear blue sky, a website I write for – Moxie Q – called me with a phenomenal opportunity. They said, “Hey, can you cover the red carpet celeb arrivals of the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. next Sunday?”
Like any good disbeliever, what did I do? I said, “Ha, ha, very funny. April Fools.” And promptly hung up. Good thing they called me back, huh?
Now I’m scheduled to fly out Sunday morning to stand with microphone in hand and interview celebs like Amy Poehler, Collin Farrell, cast members of “Glee” and “Modern Family”, Kristen Chenowith and the list goes on and on.
Somebody pinch me. (Not too hard, of course, I don’t need any disfiguring bruises on the red carpet.)
Over the years, I’ve interviewed bazillion celebs. It’s kinda become my forté. But I’ve never covered a red carpet event, where you get sixty seconds to be cute, inquisitive, charming, gregarious AND somehow get the perfect soundbyte.
I’m anticipating a few obstacles. I’ve never battled pushy publicists who shun you because of how you look or what you’re wearing. But I hope to bat my eyelashes accordingly. There’s also begging, groveling and pleading. 60% of the time, it works every time.
(Thank you, Anchorman.)
Am I nervous? No. Am I excited? I’m positively giddy. I waited a few days to announce it to the blogosphere, lest it fall through or they suddenly realize they want someone else. I’m sharpening my interviewing skills as I speak.
The ad agency I work for didn’t even miss a beat when I asked for the time off. I think they’re as pleasantly surprised as I am. I’ve gotten props and kudos from my co-workers and bosses, which is just another reason why I work there. It’s bliss all the way around.
Keep your fingers crossed for me on Sunday. What’s the worst that could happen? Wait, don’t answer that.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO WEAR?????
