When I was in high school, I knew I wanted to have a gig in TV. Or on TV. Or watching TV. I wasn’t really picky. Oh sure, I wrote for the school newspaper and was the editor of the yearbook, but, in my heart, television was calling my name.
During my stint in print, my photo editor was Mindy Myers. Even back then she was too cool for school. About the time I picked up my first stick mic, Mindy picked up her first camera. She was already artsy and kinda fartsy … so it was a good fit. Who knew at the time, she’d make a career of being a well-known professional photographer?
Mindy honed her craft in college. She found her signature style, her shoots are casual, spontaneous, honest, refined and candid. What’s funny is that anyone who knows Mindy knows how acerbic and blunt she can be. But give her a camera and a client and it’s a little slice of bliss.
When I decided to do a new batch of headshots, Mindy was at the very top of my list. 1) Because I trust her, 2) because we’re good friends and 3) because I knew she’d guzzle wine with me throughout the shoot. I feel like I’ve known Mindy for a million years and practically grew up with her. She went on to become an amazing wife and mommy of four adorable girls. She’s now a popular, sought-after photographer.
My only claim to fame is that I watched the entire DVD series of “Sex & The City” in one sitting.
Whenever I go home to Des Moines, seeing Mindy is high on my list of things to do. Over the holidays, we went out for sushi. And afterwards Mindy grabbed her camera. We took two quick shots … and both bordered on brilliance. Of course, it helps when the subjects are devastatingly gorgeous. Uh, and half in the bag.
