Sports Aficionado

I am appalled I have absolutely zero interest in sports teams, sports trivia, sports celebrities or anything even remotely sports related.  And by appalled, I mean, proudly ambivalent.

Here’s the deal.  Over the years, I’ve tried repeatedly to get super-psyched about a particular game or team only to realize I could not possibly care less.  Lord knows I’ve gone to many a baseball game and a smattering of football games, but it’s mainly for the experience.  I like to eat, drink, kibitz and pay $25 for parking as much as the next person.

Thursday, for instance, we took our show on the road to the Big 12 Tournament in downtown KC.  I painstakingly took the time to write down every little insignificant basketball detail on a piece of paper so I wouldn’t look like a total fish out of water.  Some people would call it a cheat sheet, I would call it a lifeline.  Coach’s names, team names, team colors, mascots, it was all fair game.  Our sports director can pull up any nugget of information thanks to his medulla oblongata.  I need a hastily scribbled piece of paper.

The Big 12 is a true basketball “experience”.  Folks from all over the Midwest converge upon downtown KC to root on their favorite teams before March Madness hits with a vengeance.  I was there amidst it all at the Power & Light District reveling in the booze, the hedonism and the fanny packs.  Oh, and we did our first live show down there yesterday too.  I couldn’t tell you much of what was going on around me, other than it was loudly chaotic and filled with good energy.

I was pretty proud that the Iowa State Cyclones held a rowdy pep rally during our show.  The Iowa State campus is only 40-ish minutes from my hometown of Des Moines, so I felt a kindred bond to the team and all the cheerleaders on stage.  Well, that and they were wearing a lot of sparkly make-up.  (Uh, the cheerleaders.  Not the players.)

Right now there are likely throngs, THRONGS, I tell you, of rabid fans down watching the game or binge drinking or both.  And while it was fun to be in the middle of all the action for a couple hours, it wasn’t exactly my cup of tea.  I have now checked Big 12 Tourney action off my bucket list.  Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.  (Literally. I’m wearing it in the pictures.)
