When M2 met R2 via The Hub

thehubA few blogs ago, I was just saying how I know about a hundred bazillion people in the TV news business.  My theory has once again been proven as I found myself going behind-the-scenes of “Good Morning America”… courtesy of my friend Jeremy Hubbard (a.k.a. “The Hub”).

Jeremy and I worked together in KC.  He went on to superstardom … landing an anchor job at ABC.  I, uh, grew out my bangs.   But we remained friends over the years and after about 18 months of trial and error; I finally got to hang out with him.

Jeremy has the brutal 4am-5am overnight slot on ABC World News Now, but you can see him doing segments on World News and Nightline.  He’s the quintessential utilitarian player … switching from featuring reporting to no-frills anchoring without so much as batting an eyelash.  Plus, he’s always affable.  He was one of the first people to take me under his wing at my station in KC, and for that I will always be thankful.  Oh, and he has perfect anchor-hair too.  I hate him.

DSCN0122When I found out I’d be in NY for a day, I immediately started sucking up to him to get on the set of “Good Morning America”.  I figured it would require bribing, or, at a minimum, a steak dinner.  Nope.  Jeremy met me for an early breakfast and insisted on paying the tab.  (I slipped a $20 in his bag when he wasn’t looking.)  Then it was off to GMA.

Right off the bat, I tried to contain my glee when I spied Robin Roberts.  She’s the kind of Über-delightful TV personality you want to have over for dinner.   She’s ridiculously nice and ridiculously tall, pushing 6’2″ in heels.  She towered over Jeremy.  I stood on my tiptoes when I was around her just to make myself seem important.

We hit it off.  Mainly because I, too, am a strong black woman.  Well that … AND my first words to her were, “Please don’t hold it against me that I’m friends with THAT one.”  (Cue Jeremy’s eye roll.)   We took a couple pictures on the set.  In the first one I’m sitting so upright it looks like I’m sporting a back brace.  Robin commented about my EXTREME posture.  You’ll note I’m hunched over in this pic.  I know my place.

And you can bet when I have her over to dinner, and it will happen, I will make sure all the guests at my table are slouching accordingly.

All in all … a fantastic day.
