Best Anchor, Best Friend

drewithemmyMy best friend Deirdre continues to amaze me.

Girlfriend just won the coveted Best Anchor Emmy for her work at KCRA-TV in Sacramento.  The impressive part, besides the win itself, is that Deirdre was up against talent from San Francisco.  Mind you, the Bay Area is a much larger market and perennial judge favorite.

The night before the Emmys, Dre and I kibitzed over a glass of wine.  That’s usually where some of our best chats take place.  The conversation went a little something like this:

M:  Be sure to thank me in your acceptance speech, woman. (guzzles glass of wine)

D:  I’m not going to win. (pours me more wine)

M:  Yes, you are.  (motions to keep pouring until it’s full)

D:  No, I’m not.  (wrinkles nose because I’m chugging expensive wine)

M:  Yes, you are(burps and starts drinking out of bottle)

D:  I’ll bet you $20 I lose.  (rolls eyes)

M:  You’re on.  (shakes hands)

Dre and I have known each other for over 16 years.  We practically grew up together whilst cutting our teeth at our first TV station in Des Moines.  Deirdre got promoted to SacTown several years before I got promoted to KC.  She was blessed with stunning good looks and a brain that would cause jealousy among Mensa members.  I’m forced to eek by on charm and charisma.  Fortunately, I’ve always had better hair than she has.  And as she’s often pointed out, “It’s not a lie … if you believe it.”

I love that we continue to trump each other’s aces.  It’s my favorite part of being besties.  I wouldn’t call it a rivalry, because I can’t compete with her, nor would I try.  In the last dozen or so years, she’s covered countless Olympics for NBC, got married, reproduced twice, commandeered an impressive array of philanthropic events, run a zillion marathons and won multiple Emmys.

I managed to grow out my bangs.

m2dreemmyShe laughs that she won a prestigious award for being able to read out loud.  I laugh because I just scored an easy $20.  Why I didn’t bet $100, I’ll never know?  That’s how much faith I have in her abilities.

The world is heckuva lot brighter with her in it.  That’s mainly because she’s chosen to wear her Best Anchor Emmy around her neck for the world to see.

Clearly, I taught her everything she knows.
