Late last week, the 10th Annual Stony Awards were handed out in Hollywood.
Wait? What? There’s an award for drug use? First of all, how did I miss this … and, second, how did I miss this FOR … THE … LAST … NINE … YEARS?
Produced by the fine folks at High Times Magazine, the award celebrates “the high moments in film and TV”. Classy, huh? I would say it’s like the Oscars on crack … except we’re mostly just talking about pot here, people.
Cheech and Chong opened the show. (Duh.) “We have a chance to make marijuana legal,” said an impassioned Tommy Chong on stage. “It’s very important that you support Prop 19!” Pauly Shore, meanwhile, was on hand as a presenter. (Double duh.) “My first joint I stole from my mother’s underwear drawer,” said Shore. Over the course of the evening eight awards were given away in various categories. Surprisingly, neither Stoner of the Year, John Cusack or Stonette of the Year, Drew Barrymore were on hand to accept the evening’s top awards. (Seems Cusack’s character toked up in Hot Tub Time Machine while Barrymore got blitzed in Going the Distance.) Both of them probably would have been there, but they have lives.
Awards went to:
Best Comedy: Hot Tub Time Machine
Best Drama: Holy Rollers
Best Documentary: Cheech & Chong’s Hey Watch This
Best TV Show: Breaking Bad
Best Animated TV Show: The Boondocks
Best Internet Video: Jamie’s World
Stoner of the Year: John Cusack
Stonette of the Year: Drew Barrymore
Now I ask you? How was a show like Weeds overlooked? That’s a travesty and I demand a recount. Oh wait, never mind, Breaking Bad won … and that’s a WAY better show. Meth is so much more urban and trendy nowadays. Pot is for conformists. Plus, Bryan Cranston is just a freakin’ stud. Heck, he hosted “SNL” over the weekend, which would probably explain why he wasn’t on hand to accept the award for Best TV Show.
Well, that … and he has a life too.
