Who Is Fashion’s New Billion Dollar It-Girl?

jessica_simpsonThis is insane!  You will never guess whose business is poised to make more than $1 billion in revenue this year.  Yes, billion, with a B.

Here are some more B-words to give you a hint.  Blonde.  Buffalo Wings.  Bimbo.  Bodacious.  Big-boned.

It’s the infamous and legendary Jessica Simpson … and I use both of those terms loosely.  Back in the day, the simpleton singer thought Chicken of the Sea was actually chicken.   Now her Jessica Simpson Collection line of clothes is flying off the shelves.

Here’s another B word:  Bankroll!

In New York’s Magazine’s Spring Fashion issue, the Southern belle hinted she’s laughing all the way to the bank. Her collection is a bona fide hit. “I never thought I’d be some fashion mogul!” she exclaimed.

While other celebs try and pimp out clothes no one could possibly wear (ahem, Sarah Jessica Parker), Simpson went for apparel with more mass appeal.  (Read that:  cute, inexpensive and pedestrian.)

“We try not to set trends, but you need your trending pieces in every delivery. But those go fast: What you really need is your basics for every type of person. When it comes to other celebrity brands, I think a lot of people do a great job, but it can’t be all about them. Everybody doesn’t want to just look like the celebrity, because they can’t. They just want one element of that style,” she reveals.

jessica-mom-jeansSimpson’s empire racked up $750 in revenue in 2010 and her fashion empire is slated for even bigger growth this year.  Jessica, you have come far, girl.  Props to you.  Wasn’t it just three odd years ago when you were lambasted for wearing the single most hideous of pair of Mom jeans ever?  E-V-E-R?

In the article Simpson’s business manager, David Levin, breaks it down: “A girl could go to the shopping mall with her mother and she’d have a great new outfit and still have some money left for lunch at McDonald’s. She can look like Jessica Simpson, smell like Jessica Simpson, and she can afford it.”

McDonald’s?!?  Good thing her line comes in all shapes and sizes.  Her new 2011 collection is coming soon to a mall near you.

  1. overheard a few girls at the salon the other day raving about the line. “Finally, clothes that fit us girls with big boobs.” Indeed.

  2. Seriously, I almost bought a pair of her shoes for my wedding last year. Oh, well. There’s always my second wedding.
